Book Blitz and Giveaway: Lost Eden by G.P. Ching

Lost Eden

Series: The Soulkeepers #5

Author: G.P. Ching

Genre: Paranormal, Young Adult

Available from:

Synopsis

Rules. Balance. Consequences. War.

When Fate gave Dane the water from Eden to drink, she did more than save his life. She changed his destiny. Since the beginning, a compact between God and Lucifer has maintained a tenuous peace, balancing Soulkeepers and Watchers and the natural order of things. Dane upset that balance the day he became a Soulkeeper. Fate broke the rules. Now, Lucifer is demanding a consequence, requiring Fate to pay the ultimate price for her involvement. God intervenes on the immortal’s behalf but in order to save her soul must dissolve the compact and with it the rules, order, and balance that have kept the peace. A challenge is issued. A contest for human souls begins. And the stakes? Earth. Winner take all. The Soulkeepers are at the center of a war between Heaven and Hell, and this time, nobody, anywhere, is safe from Lucifer’s reach.

Excerpt

God approached him, the air crackling with her presence. The back of Lucifer’s head glowed brassy in her light. “Very well. What is your suggested price?”

“My price is Fate. She has been in her position far too long. I will choose her replacement, and she will step down.”

“No!” Fatima yelled, her hands flying to cover her foolhardy mouth. Why had she allowed her true feelings to show? Now he’d be even more likely to use those feelings against her.

He turned the force of his stare on her, laughing through a toothy half smile. “Oh yes, Fatima. Perhaps, I will not only choose your replacement but take your soul as my own.” In a blink, he was in her face, his hand on the small of her back. Her skin squirmed beneath his touch. “You are a beautiful sinner. Hell, could use an ornament such as you.”

“Let her go.” A wash of cool light poured through the room, and Lucifer retreated, joints folding unnaturally in his haste for the shadows. “The Watchers who reside on Earth negate your ability to make such a demand. You are in breach of the law, Lucifer. You must return your minions to Nod or Hell.”

“Or what?” Lucifer carefully slithered into the shadow of a bolt of fabric where his eyes could open fully.

“Or the compact is rendered null and void.”

“War.” The word rolled off of his tongue, smooth as melted butter.

Malini’s Favorite Things by G.P. Ching

‘Tis the season to give thanks, readers! With the release of book five in the Soulkeepers series, Malini won’t stop talking to me about all of the things she wants you to know. Today, she made me promise to gab about a few of her favorite organizations, the ones she thinks are doing a lot of good in the world.

See, as Healer, Malini is the charitable sort. She’s interested first in helping others. So, for today’s guest post, I’m featuring three charities that Malini endorses as effective Healers of our non-fictional world.

Compassion International: This organization connects sponsors with needy children across the globe to provide basic needs, education, and health care with the goal of lifting them from the cycle of poverty. I know what you’re thinking. How much REALLY gets to the kids. Well, in the case of CI, most of it. The organization has earned the highest rating from Charity Navigator for twelve consecutive years for being one of the most efficiently run charitable organizations out there. Beyond that, I was privileged to have two close personal friends travel to Africa this year to see the results first hand. You can read about their journey here. (The Ching household is privileged to sponsor Juan Daniel from Peru.) http://www.compassion.com

The Carter Center: Former president Jimmy Carter and his wife help lead the Carter Foundation, a charitable organization guided by a fundamental commitment to human rights and the alleviation of human suffering; it seeks to prevent and resolve conflicts, enhance freedom and democracy, and improve health.* What I love about the Carter Foundation is they have very specific and obtainable goals and the foundation is achieving measurable results. Take the guinea worm. This parasite once infected 3.5 million people in Africa in 1986. Thanks to the Carter foundation, there were only 542 reported cases in 2012. The Carter Center does not duplicate the efforts of other effective charities and also has the top rating by Charity Navigator. http://www.cartercenter.org/index.html

The Conservation Fund: Malini would certainly be concerned about our planet and I think she’d love what The Conservation Fund is doing. This highly rated charity finds ways to preserve the environment while balancing economic development for sustainable results. The fund has protected 7 million acres across America. http://www.conservationfund.org

Okay, okay. *Slaps Malini’s hands back from the keyboard* Geesh, characters can be so bossy! Malini would also like you to know that anything you do for others, even on the smallest, most personal level, is a form of Healing, and she thanks you for your help. As Mother Theresa once said, “We can do no great things, only small things with great love.”

Thank you for visiting today. Malini and I hope you enjoy Lost Eden.

Author Q&A

How did you come up with the idea for the Soulkeepers?
I was talking to a friend about creation stories one day, the one with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, and I questioned how the serpent was able to get to the woman. It was supposed to be the safest, most perfect place created by God. When I started to research different interpretations of the creation story based on this questioning, another story started to play out in my brain, one of a boy who didn’t believe in God but would come to play a pivotal role in the battle between Heaven and Hell. That was the birth of the Soulkeepers series.
Tell us about Lost Eden
In Lost Eden, the agreement between God and Lucifer is dissolved as a consequence of Fate making Dane a Soulkeeper. A challenge ensues for human souls. When Lucifer and his Watchers unleash Hell on Earth, the Soulkeepers use Eden as their safe house while attempting to recover Abigail, who is abducted by Lucifer, and help God win the challenge. Unfortunately, new rules mean that even Eden isn’t safe from Lucifer, and it’s just a matter of time before he destroys their last safe haven.
Some reviewers have accused you of trying to manipulate young readers’ belief systems with your books. Is the Soulkeepers an evangelical series?
Absolutely not, although you might call the series religious in the same way the DaVinci Code is religious. There’s nothing wrong with Christian books. I am Christian and proud to be. But when it comes to the Soulkeepers, while the books are based on Judeo -Christian history and mythology (Angels, Watchers, Garden of Eden) and have some Christian themes, they are not prescriptively Christian. The books are about faith in general, friendship, loyalty, redemption, and the power of doing the right thing even when it is difficult.
What do you hope readers take away from your novels?
First and foremost, I want them to be entertained. I write novels to give people a mental break from a stressful world. Beyond that, the story is meant to be life affirming, to give a sense of hope, and to encourage acceptance of self and others.
You took some knocks after the fourth book, Soul Catcher, because it featured a homosexual main character. Do you regret the route you took with that book?
No I don’t regret it. I did receive some hate mail and reviews after book 4. What’s important to me is that I remained true to my story and my characters, their individual triumphs and challenges, and true to myself.
Lost Eden is book five in the series. How many books will there be?
Six. The Last Soulkeeper, will end the series and will be released first quarter 2014.
How does it feel to be wrapping up the series?
I have mixed emotions. When I self-published the Soulkeepers in 2011, I said I’d be happy if I sold one hundred copies. Two years later and I’ve sold hundreds of thousands of copies of the books in this series. The Last Soulkeeper ends the story arc as I imagined it. I believe it will be a complete and fulfilling ending for my readers. However, I’ve lived for two years with these characters in my head. I imagine the release of the sixth book will be like a death in some ways. This book, then, is like the beginning of the end.

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by the Broke and the Bookish in which they post a Top Ten list of bookish things and invite you to share your own top ten.

Top Ten Books I'd Recommend To My Best Friend

Pride and Prejudice

Come on, it's one of my favorite books of all time! I would suggest it to anyone

VwDT cover

The latest book by my favorite paranormal romance author - while it is book #14 in the series, it's not a series where you necessarily have to read them in order. It's the best yet!!

Acheron cover

Acheron is just the most swoon worthy of Sherrilyn Kenyon's dark-hunter series. This is a fabulous book.

deja dead cover

These books are so wonderful. These are the Temperance Brennan books that the television show Bones was LOOSELY based on. Kathy Reichs is a talented author. They are just too good to pass up.

Silent Night 2 cover

A wonderful series. Each book is a semi-stand alone novel. This is my favorite of the group. I just love it so much. Goddesses, Gods, mermaids, mermen, and just a wonderful, wonderful adventure.

Gligamesh cover

In true English major fashion, I LOVE this book. I only wish that more of the tablets were found. Although, the "..." do make for some fun parts.

The Canterbury Tales cover
I love Chaucer and Middle English so much. I think it's such a wonderful set of stories. Especially the Miller's tale.

Bayou Heat cover

Wonderful, wonderful series! Two great authors, one great compilation.

P.S. cover

The movie was pretty good, but it did very little justice to the book. They changed the setting, changed Holly's family dynamic, and very many other important things in the book. It makes you laugh, makes you cry, and makes you mad. It's fantastic, just keep tissues nearby.

Dark Prince cover

This is the first book in a great series. I think it's at like book #24 or something around there now. It's a lot, but this series is still kicking and delivering amazing men and stories. :D

Series Synopsis

Set in the near future, these three heart-stopping novels follow Riley as she overcomes the murder of her younger sister by tracking down the killer across a post-apocalyptic Britain. At the same time, she is forced to take on the might of a twisted regime intent on conquering the nation. The series is packed with action, suspense, drama and dystopian adventure.

Excerpt

The two men were youngish with beards, wearing layers of filthy clothing. One of them had a face-full of piercings – lip rings, eyebrow studs and a hoop through his nose. They were both skinny and hollow-cheeked with deep-set eyes. As they drew closer, I saw pure hostility in their faces and it took all my strength of will not to throw the truck into reverse and gun it all the way home.

‘What’s your business here?’ the man with the nose hoop called out.

‘I lowered the window a fraction. ‘I’m a friend of Lou’s.’

‘ ‘Lou?’ They took a few steps closer, their weapons still lowered.

‘ ‘Yeah. Fair-haired girl with two younger brothers. Lives up close to the compound wall.’

‘ ‘I know who Lou is,’ nose-hoop replied. ‘What d’you want with her?’

‘ ‘She helped me out yesterday. I’ve come to say thanks.’

‘ ‘Get out of the truck and I’ll fetch her over.’

‘ ‘I’d rather stay inside till she gets here if that’s okay.’

‘They stopped a few yards away and talked to each other in low tones so I couldn’t hear. By now, several other gypsies had come close to the wire fence to see what was going on. I’d started to cause a bit of a stir – exactly what I hadn’t wanted to do.

‘ ‘Out of the truck,’ nose-hoop repeated, aiming his rifle at the windscreen. ‘Slowly. Hands in the air.’

‘I hadn’t come here for a gunfight, so it didn’t look as though I had much choice. I would have to do as he asked.

Why I Write YA Fiction by Shalini Boland

I’m just a big kid.
I write in the Young Adult genre mainly because I identify most with that age group. I’ve never really felt like a proper grownup. (Except when I’m arguing on the phone with British Telecom).
Brave or stupid?
It’s a biological fact that teens’ brains are wired differently to adults’ brains. Which is probably why adults and teens clash so much. Teens don’t necessarily make the same informed choices that adults do. They might just do things as opposed to, erm, thinking things through. I’ve had readers say, ‘Why did such and such a character do that? It was just dumb.’ But another reader might class the same action as extreme bravery.
That’s the beauty of writing YA fiction; you have these amazing vibrant characters who just do stuff of their own accord. Sometimes, I swear they take over my laptop and write themselves.
Ahh, teen angst,
I love it. It’s deliciously self-indulgent, but absolutely justified. All that sexual tension and hormonal activity racing around teen bodies is a recipe for deep introspection/rage/misery/burning love. Those moments when they gnaw the skin off their knuckles and stare at the ceiling, fuelling their angst with music and dark literature.
Coming-of-age
Forging their way in the world. Making mistakes and finding their place when everyone else seems to know theirs. I especially like dumping my teens into scary settings without parents. Making them grow up quickly. Throwing them into tricky situations where they have to lose their childish ways and come through for someone else.
I don’t write FOR young adults. I write for myself,
for the memory of the teen I used to be, if that makes sense. I imagine being back at that age and how it truly felt to be neither child nor adult, but something in between. In your own exclusive world that no one else really understands. When I write, I pull out all those feelings I once had and keep them close to the surface – that first kiss, the insecurity, the excitement of new experiences. It’s all there inside us, if we care to remember. I think that’s why adults enjoy reading literature about teens – it takes us back to that time and place; like the smell of cheap aftershave or an illicit cigarette.

Author Q&A

What can you tell us about The Outside Series?
Set in the near future, these three novels follow Riley as she overcomes the murder of her younger sister by tracking down the killer across a post-apocalyptic Britain. At the same time, she is forced to take on the might of a twisted regime intent on conquering the nation.
The story is full of action and adventure with a smattering of angsty romance. Books two and three become more darkly dystopian.
How do you develop your characters?
My characters grow as I write them. I always think of their upbringing and their circumstances and what bearing this will have on their actions. I try to put myself in their position - How would they really react in a particular situation?
I often back my characters into impossible situations or give them difficult dilemmas to deal with, that even I don’t know how to deal with. I hope this makes the story more unpredictable and the drama more realistic.
The naming process is very important to me. If a character has a good name, they can come alive. Sometimes, a minor character with a great name will try to take over and carve out a bigger role. I usually let them!
Who is your ideal reader?
Someone who likes the ‘what if …’ scenario: What if you were living your life and it took an unexpected twist?
My books are aimed at young adults, but I write the kinds of books that I would like to read myself – post-apocalyptic adventure and urban fantasy with a twist of horror and a dusting of romance. My current readers are aged anywhere from thirteen to seventy.
What was your journey as a writer?
I used to be a singer songwriter, signed to Universal Music. But it’s not a lifestyle that goes well with having a family and I found myself resenting the time spent away from my kids. I wasn’t successful enough to have nannies and entourages!
One day, I had an idea for a great ending to a story and I started scribbling my first novel. Writing fiction gave me the new creative outlet I needed. Plus, I can write from home and set my own timetable. I love it!
What is your writing process?
I don’t have a set-in-stone process. I usually have a rough plan and work my way steadily through the chapters, editing as I go.
What authors most inspire you?
Authors who can weave multiple plot lines with ease, whose characters evoke strong emotions and who can keep you guessing till the end. I’m in awe of Carlos Ruis Zafon, Laini Taylor, Stephenie Meyer, Suzanne Collins and Paullina Simons.
What books, written by someone else, do you wish you'd written yourself?
Life of Pi by Yann Martel, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins or Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor.

This is a snippet of a conversation between Jay and his cousin, Teague.
(Teague is the main character in book ONE - Kiss This.)

“You should just be more careful about who you hook up with,” Teague said.
“You’re one to talk,” Jay retorted. “Hello Kate?”
Teague looked at him hard. “Exactly, asshole. I’m speaking from experience. I met a lying bitch of a schemer and was totally fucked over by her. I don’t want that shit to happen to you, Jay. Just take the damn advice and think about it, okay? You have these pissed off exes and wannabe stalkers that—”
“Hey, I don’t have ‘exes’,” Jay corrected him.
“Fine, women that you’ve pissed off with your charming personality.”
“Why is it that they get pissed off in the first place? How more honest can I get than ‘this is only a one-night thing, sweetheart’. They willingly agree, so why does there have to be fucking hurt feelings over it?”
“You ever think that women may not ‘really’ fully agree with you?”
Jay laughed sarcastically. “How is it my fault if they say one thing but mean another?”

Book TWO is HIS Story!

My main interests include music, surfing, and dance. I also love to travel and I'm obsessed with baseball as well as several other sports. But there are DOZENS of other things that I'm into because I enjoy learning and trying new things. I love meeting new people and the experiences I gain from it. I'm feisty. I love to joke around. My sense of humor is generously proportioned, but I can trim it down when needed. Usually.

Life is about balance. I believe that with every unfortunate moment, there is always something better to counter it. We may not always see it right away, but I have faith that a pure heart will always come out on top. With this understanding, I feel it is an essential part of our lives to give more than to receive. I don't even mean monetarily. Your time and concern has more value than any nickel or dollar. Even the smallest lovingact can go a long ways and you will be blessed with many opportunities to do your part. The most important concept I like to follow is just the age-old Golden Rule: Treat others how you'd want to be treated. It is so simple.

I love to tell stories, and it wasn't until recently that I started to share them. I care about every reader as a person. Thank you for the encouraging messages, the kind suggestions, and your friendship.

Thank you for taking the time to care.

Excerpt

Taking a deep breath, I left the cover of the wall and slowly sauntered out through the crowd with my head held high. The warriors halted in mid-motion, bowing as I walked past them heading toward Brayden. He hadn’t turn to acknowledge me, but with the rigid stance and the tenseness in his muscles I knew he could feel I was there.

“What are you doing here?” Brayden asked, his voice bland and disinterested as he kept his back to me.

“I’m not going to answer that question until you turn to face me,” I snapped. The warriors around us gasped and halted with their mouths wide open, staring back and forth at us.

Brayden crossed his arms over his chest and finally turned to face me. Yep, he was back to being the emotionless bastard that he was before. However, I was going to fix that problem … fast. Now that I had his attention I said, “Whether you like it or not I’m here to train. Either you can fight with me or I’ll find one of these other handsome warriors to teach me a thing or two.”

When all he did was clench his teeth, I backed away from him and pulled out my sword, turning around so I could address the warriors. “All right, since Prince Brayden won’t answer me, who here wants to fight me and help me train?”

Several of the warriors smiled while others looked to Brayden for guidance. I heard one of them whispering to another, “I don’t feel right about fighting his queen.”

Brayden heard the fighter say it too because his gaze instantly found mine. “I’m not his queen,” I announced, narrowing my eyes at him.

“She’s right,” he agreed. “She’s not my queen. If she wants to fight then let’s show her how we do it in the Winter Court.”

The guys all hollered and resumed back to their fighting, except I caught several of them sneak glances my way to watch me battle. Brayden picked a couple of his warriors to stand back and join me, all circling me like I was their prey. With my sword gripped firmly in my right hand, I was ready. However, I couldn’t stop myself from taunting Brayden just a little bit more. He was standing outside of the circle, watching on with a smirk on his face.

“What’s wrong, Prince Brayden, afraid you might get your ass kicked?” I teased.

Brayden’s smirk grew wider and he retorted back, “Not at all, Princess. I just have to see if you are worthy enough to fight me.”
